ADVIt went somewhat unnoticed last Saturday when Thad Matta and the Ohio State Buckeyes basketball team landed some much needed shooting help from the commitment of Amedeo Della Valle - after all, it happened the morning of Urban Meyer's first spring game in Columbus. Focus was elsewhere, understandably. Now that we're through the spring game - and the NFL Draft - it's time to take a look at exactly what the Buckeyes gained.

Della Valle, a 6'3" 180 pound combo guard out of famed Findlay Prep (Henderson, NV), chose Ohio State over offers from Arizona, Gonzaga, Michigan and Texas A&M after making a mid-week visit to Columbus just a few days before Meyer's spring game. His commitment, while under the radar, is invaluable for the basketball program.

Just three weeks ago Thad Matta and his staff were looking to fill only one void - that left by graduating senior William Buford. When the dust settled Jared Sullinger had departed while JD Weatherspoon and Jordan Siebert decided it was in their best interest to transfer out, leaving the Buckeyes with four spots to fill and some catching up to do. SNagging Della Valle shortly after his official visit was key, and should help give Ohio State some much needed options on the offensive end in 2012-13.

So who is this kid?

For starters he made his way to Columbus via the state of Nevada, but is originally from Italy, not all that uncommon for the new wave of European players who end up in the states. He averaged 12 points and 3 assists for Findlay Prep last season but the important statistic, and the one Ohio State needed to most, is the fact that he shot 54% from behind the arc. Nobody felt the loss of Jon Diebler last year as much as Jared Sullinger did after being constantly collapsed on by perimeter defenders with no threat of anyone knocking down outside shots. While Sullinger is now off to an NBA city, adding a shooter of Della Valle's capabilities always serves to open up the middle on the offensive end. That will do nothing but help Amir Williams as he develops into the big presence the Buckeyes need.
